During bedtime reading one night, I came across the captivating story of the “tomb of worriors” in the necropolis of Eleftherna, where the excavation is still in progress and the archaeologists found 480 vases, weapons and the trench of the warriors killed during battle.
In 2010 they came across one of the most important discoveries, when they brought to light one unlooted tomb of 700BC. The tomb was a huge lying jar, with its entrance barred by one 800kg boulder. Inside the jar there were the bones of a young couple, probably siblings. The couple was covered with a gold cap, consisting of 3000 gold sheets of different shapes!
However, the most salient finding amongst the above, was the gold pendant jewel brought by the girl, featuring the Queen Bee as a goddess for the first time in Crete! And it’s amazing that when the jewel is turned upside down, you get to see a beautifuly shaped lily!
From inpiration to creation!
The two sided pendant made me think of the dual roles, like those of women. In endless pairing or combinations, we are working mums, friends, daughters, wives, partners, colleagues. Bearing responsibilities, initative, active participation and mostly, a key role, like that of the queen bee, around which revolves the life of the whole beehive. At the same time, like a flower lily, a woman colours, illuminates and brings the fresh look and joy of life around her! Dual role, like the two sides of that jewel. My thoughts put enough stimulous to create. But I also needed a goal, something to mobilise.
The International Women’s Day, on the 8th of March, must not be treated like another global superficial anniversary, which like Valentine’s day, signals a shopping march and a frantic collection of red hearted rose baskets in flower shops. Well, it seemed like a wonderful opportunity to symbolise the immense social contribution and impact of women, in hardship and everyday life too, their tireless presence in family, education, work and in the constant dynamics that lead to change.

I decided to add to LilysCraftedFeelings collections, one more handmade creation: “Queen Bee” will come in just 100 handmade, numbered copies, with the occasion of the 8th March. For 45 days I will make an open call, to public and to you, my friends and blog readers, to spread the word and, if you wish, to buy this item.
